Web design principles, the good bad and the ugly!
While anyone can
have a Web site, it does not mean all sites are great! There are websites,
and books specifically dedicated to blasting truly tacky, ugly websites. To
avoid that trap here are a few design principles to help you on your way.
Layout and design can be a very "delicate" topic. Like the old adage,
"beauty lies in the eye of the beholder" What may be wonderful to you, may
be yuck to someone else. Rather than just throw information at your audience
in a random manner, organize your content to a logical and aesthetically
pleasing format. The Web makes it very easy to control how your information
is presented. We are dedicated to assisting you in your web design, but we
do it the way you want it!
Some general guidelines you can follow:
Again, the artistic side of a Web site is up to individual tastes, and
everyone will have their own idea of what looks good. Do not minimize the
importance of first impressions, as sometimes they are our last.
Photographs and Graphics
A standard rule should apply here. If the image does not
show your business to it’s best advantage...don’t put in your site! All too
often clients are overly anxious to finish their site fast, with the intent
to "take a better photo later" If your photo does you a disservice, wait
and put one that is good! You can actually hurt your business with poor
images. Please provide digital in .JPEG format cd with resolution minimum of 200 dpi. It is vital that the
images we work with are clear.
One common mistake is to over do it when putting together
a site. A page can become so cluttered that your visitor becomes lost in a
jungle of graphics, type and photos. Too much can overwhelm your
visitor...but adding just the right balance can be a real asset!
By now you should have a good idea of who your target
audience will be. There are a few standards to keep in mind about your
visitors, and their equipment capabilities. While large viewing screens are
becoming more affordable, many of your visitors will have a monitor screen
no larger a 13" color T.V. This is small! So when you put together your wish
list, be sure to keep in mind some may not be able to view large images or
pages at one time without scrolling. Try to keep relevant information in a
"screen by screen" format. Scrolling is a great tool, but you can loose your
audience if they have to work hard to find your information.
So relax, BREATHE .... and let the fun begin!
